In the jungle, Hathi mated with a fellow Indian elephant named, "Winifred" with whom he had a son named Hathi, Jr. By unknown means, Hathi found his way to the jungles of India where he became a wild elephant.

According to Hathi, he was once awarded the Victoria Cross, for bravery above and beyond the call of duty though the validity of this claim is unknown. Colonel Hathi is an Indian elephant in the 19th century which was domesticated and used within the Maharajah's 5th Pachyderm Brigade.
